Works for Me Wednesday – Pantry Organization

Works for Me Wednesday

When putting my groceries away, I now try to get rid of as much extra packing material as I can.

Cereal, crackers, waffles, Texas Toast, applesauce and babyfood are all on my list of boxes I open and discard while putting my groceries away.

This way, I have more space in my pantry, don't have to spend time opening boxes as I'm preparing food and can go ahead and break down all the cardboard at once for recycling.

I really REALLY need to do this.

I like that idea. I try and do that as well.. I just can't stand extra things sitting around. It drives me bonkers.. So if something is almost gone I have to toss it.. or if the cereal box just seems to bulky I take the bag out.. sounds like I have problems LOL :)

Sounds like a great idea to me!

This is a great tip that I already practice. This is also a great time saver and prevents me from pulling out the cereal bag to find that there is not enough for breakfast.

Stop y and check out my WFMW tips. I posted 2 of them.

Such a good idea! Do you label the bags with whatever is in them, or do you just have a splendid memory? :)

I definitely see the good in this, but.. it would drive me INSANE!! LOL! I need the rigidity of the box or the kids would have all of the contents ground to a powder before we got half way through the packages! I also 'need' it for my OCD *whistles*

Funny -- I do this with a lot of products, but *not* with cereal. I lay cereal boxes on their side, so the box keeps them in place.

That's a good idea. I like the see-through containers, too, for pasta and oatmeal and cereal and beans and . . .

That's a great idea. Never thought of that. And my pantry is always in need of sprucing up and making room. Thanks!

Good tip - I would need the Texas Toast box to remember how to cook them. :)

ok, i know this is weird...but do you worry about mice? i know they can chew as easily through cardboard as they can the plastic, but for some reason, i like that extra barrier! ;)

we put most of our cereals in plastic containers because of our....um, incident. :D

Jendeis – Sometimes I find myself peering into the bags trying to figure out what's in them, but most of the time I can just tell by looking. I like the idea of labeling them, though!

Chrissy, Reprehriestless, Marigold – I didn't realize this until I read your comments, but one thing that makes this work for me is that our pantry is actually a pull-out cabinet, and my cereal sits on the bottom shelf, which is really more like a drawer. It definitely takes up less space this way too, which is good because it's not the biggest pantry around.

Nash Deville – We actually broil our Texas Toast, so we don't need the instructions; we just watch it and turn it when it starts to brown and then take it out before it burns...or sometimes we don't, but that's our plan. :P

Kim – I think I'd rather the mice chew through the bags than jump out of the boxes at us. :P On a serious note, Sean sealed up the back of the pantry, and the front seals when it's closed, so it's actually mouse proof now.
